Capacity Building and Curriculum Reform in English Language Enhancement

As the delivery unit of language enhancement courses, the Centre for Language in Education
(CLE) endeavours to demonstrate excellence in curriculum design and assessment for learning in
the English Enhancement Programme (EEP). To further enhance students’ English proficiency,
employability and readiness for future studies, this proposed project aims to strengthen the
learning and teaching in Discipline-Specific English Support (DSES) courses and International
English Language Testing System (IELTS) preparation. For capacity building, we will form a
community of practice regarding the learning and teaching in DSES among tertiary students and
academic/teaching staff. Furthermore, we will develop two learning packages for language
teachers and learners: (a) Form-focused corpus-based IELTS learning resources for teacher
education and (b) Meaning-focused mini-course series on intercultural education and IELTS
preparation. We will conduct a study of the four EEP courses with DSES and IELTS components,
analyze the results, and apply the insights to improve our teaching. These initiatives can help to
boost the profiles of the University and the Centre as a leader of language education in Hong Kong and beyond.
